In the race to become the best messenger app for smartphones, WhatsApp has long been the dominant force. Having said that, users still have to go to Viber or other options when they want to make voice calls. So, to keep pace with its competitors, WhatsApp introduced voice calling a few weeks ago. WhatsApp voice calling has been present on Android for quite some time now. In fact, it has been so long since the WhatsApp voice calling update on Android that the app’s next major update has been released as well. On iOS though, it’s a completely different story. WhatsApp for iPhone has just started receiving the voice calling update a few hours ago!
While the app’s 2.12.1 update is available for almost the entire iOS user-base, you might not see the WhatsApp voice calling feature on your device just yet. Voice calls will be rolled out gradually for everyone who downloads the latest update.
To see if you have received the feature, head to a contact’s chat thread and look in the top-right corner. If you see a telephone receiver icon, you can now make WhatsApp calls to anyone who has this update as well. As has been the case for Android users, the voice quality is not perfect yet and there is a considerable amount of echo in all calls. Having said that, the quality is not so bad that you cannot understand the person on the other end.
Of course, the calls have been added to the update for free, and all you need is an active internet connection to talk to your friends in real-time. WhatsApp voice calling might be considered an extension of the audio notes feature of the app, which has been around for a long time, and still remains present in the app.
Other Changes in The WhatsApp Voice Calling Update
While the focus is on voice calling in WhatsApp 2.12.1, there are some other additions in the update as well. The sharing menu has been extended, and the app offers the recently captured photos as a suggestion when you try to attach an image in a chat thread. You can also crop videos within WhatsApp before sending them out to friends.
A longstanding issue that this update has resolved is editing contact names. If you see that a contact’s name has been saved wrong in your iPhone, it is now possible to modify the contact information without having to go to the Contacts app.
As always, WhatsApp remains free and can be downloaded from the following link.
